Movie : Fanny och Alexander (1982)

I don't really understand the appreciation for this movie. It seemed drawn out, meaningless and boring, and this was the short 3 hr version. A 5 hr version exists, I can't imagine how unbearable that one would be.

I've racked my brain trying to figure out the purpose of this movie, but I keep coming back to the lack of purpose. The movie is made to show us the day to day lives of these people, and how average it is. Even when someone dies, there is no sense of importance to it. When the title character, Alexander (who is only seen in the movie for a brief part, and has no real impact on the story), is assaulted by his step-father, you feel outrage at the act, but you really don't care about the boy, because you don't know anything about him, he's a secondary character, as are they all. Everyone in the movie is a secondary character, and not to the plot, which there is none.

Bergman's last movie. I haven't seen many Bergman movies, but I've liked and disliked them equally. There are no great visual or acting landmarks here, and while Bergman made other TV movies, this would be his last feature.

Perhaps the purpose is to show what life is really like for these people, making it as realistic and monotonous as possible. It's not the type of movie I want to see.
