Movie : Fracture (2007)

I'm not sure what to say about this movie. I'm not sure why it was made. The story and eventual ending are clever, but couldn't endure through a 2 hour movie. It would have been great on C.S.I., or even a half hour show, but was stretched far too thin for a feature.

Hopkins played the roll well, but seemed underused. If he was the co-lead, he didn't have much of a presence. As though he had a few free days to shoot a movie. His importance in the movie seemed to be more implied than exhibited.

Ryan Gosling is a good actor, see Half Nelson (2006). But oddly in a 2 hour movie, they seemed to skip a lot of his character. Meaning : he is acting this way because we tell you he is.

As I said, the story is clever, but does require you to accept some coincidences. It kept my interest through most of the movie, but only because I was waiting for the story to begin. Was the story
a murder mystery, the lawyer's struggles, Hopkins's evil character, a courtroom drama, a battle of wits? All of the above without focusing on any one.

The cinematographer, Kramer Morgenthau did a great job. Each shot is set up beautifully. Creative and visually clear.

p.s. I don't like movies that tell you they're clever.

3 out of 5

***Spoilers***

Pretty coincidental that the investigator who arrived at the house would be the same one having an affair with his wife. Kind of odd why Hopkins's character would take such a personal interest in the prosecutor. As if he were, perhaps, “Hannibalesque”.
