Movie : Brother Bear (2003)

This was the last traditionally hand drawn Disney movie before they transitioned abysmally to 3D animation. It's not as good as I would have hoped. The story, while having emotional and humorous moments, delved too much into being a morality tale.

Stories can have a moral, can teach a lesson, but the problems arise when it becomes obvious. When the audience feels as though they are being preached and hammered over the head with a moral club, you lose their interest.

Visually it's beautiful, particularly the backgrounds and lighting. I wasn't as impressed by the characters. They seemed to lack a real charm, perhaps some more time was needed to work on this.

I was eager to see the Bob and Doug meese, but was disappointed. While being gloriously, cliche Canadian characters, they lacked the charm they had on SCTV (1976 – 1981). Rick Moranis actually seemed to be more like his character in Ghostbusters (1984).

It had a good basic story, but animated movies have always seemed to fail in portraying Native Americans in an interesting way. I don't know why they always have to be mystical. I would like to see native characters that have normal lives, and have honest experiences, see Dances with Wolves (1990) or Little Big Man (1970).

The positive reviews of this movie
I've read are because of its good moral teachings and positive story. I'm not sure that is what makes a good movie. If that's all that it takes to make a “good” movie, then that's a formula that could be followed by anyone.

3 ½ out of 5
