Book : It – Stephen King

Hmmm. Where do I start? I think as with most King novels, as it's been said before, it's a popcorn book, enjoyable at the time, but not very filling.

Let me say. I think Stephen King is an amazing writer. He'll never read this, so I'm not trying to suck up to him. His book On Writing, is brilliant. I find it inspiring and informative.

His skill as a writer is as good as any other. Anything he wants to put on the page, anything he wants to make the reader feel, he can do. His use of simile and metaphor is enviable. (I have to say at this time, I love spell check)

All that being said, it depresses me to say, I don't like his books. I don't think I like what he writes. The Shining is still one of my favorite novels. But others, Salem's Lot, The Dark Tower, and now It have disappointed me. I can't believe how disturbing this is to me. I really want to like his books, I have such admiration for him.

I won't give up on his books yet. I don't think I'll enjoy Carrie, Christine, or Cujo, so if you have a recommendation let me know.

It, is extremely long, with a lot of unnecessary sequences. This makes me wonder if this is what writing should be. Should you delve into the smallest of thoughts and run away on information about characters unimportant experiences? I don't think so. Tell the story, don't say more than is necessary, cut everything else. But then, most stories would be shorts. Even cutting ruthlessly, this book would be long.

I did enjoy parts of the book. Like I said, King is a great writer. At times your are drawn into the story. But most times, you're going off on odd excursions.

The story started off slowly, but with possibilities, and then, I believe, went in the wrong direction. The clown wasn't what I had imagined. That's possibly my failing and not the writer's. If you start judging a book by how you would like it, you might as well write it yourself.

***Spoilers***

Why did they lose their memories at the end? You would think that with, It, dead, the magic would be gone. Does this mean the town has magic of its own, or the clown's magic is left over?

The kids having sex creeped me out. Wasn't quite sure why that was necessary.
