There are many really good trailers that use footage from the film, adding voice over and new music to create enticing footage. Trailers like 300 (2006), Dr. Strangelove (1964), The Matrix (1999) and Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003) are great trailers and I'll have to make a trailers Top 5 part 2 for those. But this list has footage shot specifically for the preview and instead of re-editing what was already shot, take on a whole other level of creativity.
Spiderman (2002)
It wasn't my favorite movie, but I thought this trailer was excellent. This sequence wasn't in the movie, and was pulled from theatres after 9/11. It's unfortunate because instead of being insensitive, I think It's a great tribute to New York and to the towers.
The Shining (1980)
Possibly the most terrifying and minimalistic trailer of all. I can imagine the effect it had on people when it came out. A dark theatre, a repetitive straining beat, and only credits rolling up the screen. You're definitely not expecting the ending.
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
Shot specifically for the preview, this is everything a good trailer should be. Great shots of the mechs and then Arnie. You can't help but be tempted to see the movie after viewing this.
Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)
A shocking scene, that is a complete surprise. I thought it was a real cosmetics ad.
Psycho (1960)
This one is great because it leads and gives the audience behind the scenes information and creates interest. And of course with Hitchcock a nice ending.
