Movie : Thief (1981)

I had heard good things about this movie and although I've never been a fan of James Caan, I was interested in seeing it. Unfortunately Frank, Caan's character isn't someone that I could empathize with. Frank wants to have one last big robbery and live out the rest of his days in a “fantasy” life. The problem is, because he's such a disturbing character, I didn't want him to succeed.

It has an 80's aroma about it, starting with Michael Mann's trademark Miami Vice (1984), neon titles. Tangerine Dream's, normally entertaining, music permeates the air as well.

Frank is portrayed as a semi-mentally challenged character, with a dream to marry and have kids with Jessie, played by Tuesday Weld. Her character seems a little too unrealistic, with what she was willing to accept from a partner, perhaps she was just desperate.

The scene in the diner, is the one bright spot in this movie. The dialogue and acting had a realism and honesty to it.

I liked Robert Prosky's character, portrayed as caring and sympathetic, but at the same time you're on you're guard to see what he's going to do.

***Spoilers***

Frank's change at the end of the movie seemed obvious and over-done. With a single focused mentality, you knew that he was going to destroy all he owned to follow his philosophy of life, don't care about anything and you can't lose anything.
